-Got this message, thought I’d pass it along-

Please do not turn on A/C as soon as you enter the car.
Open the windows after you enter your car & wait several minutes before turning ON the air-conditioner.

Here’s why: According to a research, the car dashboard, & interior materials emit Benzene,
A Cancer causing toxin (carcinogen)
You can actually observe the smell of heated plastic in your car.
In addition to causing cancer, Benzene poisons your bones, causes
Anaemia & reduces white blood cells.
Prolonged exposure will cause Leukemia, increasing the risk of cancer & may also cause miscarriages..
Acceptable Benzene level indoors is 50 mg per sq.ft.
A car parked indoors with windows closed will contain
400-800 mg of Benzene.
If parked outdoors under the sun at a temperature above 60 degrees F, the Benzene level goes up to
2000-4000 mg, 40 times the acceptable level…
People who get into the car, keeping windows closed will inevitably inhale, in quick
Succession excessive amounts of the toxin. Benzene is a toxin that
Affects your kidney & liver.
What’s worse, it is extremely difficult for your body to expel this toxic stuff..
So friends, please open the windows & doors of your car - give some time time before you turn on the a/c

So, what you’re telling me is that there is actually a BENEFIT for me not having a car with a working AC??  Woohoo!  lol…

Before you say “Oh my god, you live in Florida and don’t have a car with a working AC??”  There is something you should know:

100200300.jpg

...My car has over 300,000 miles on it, and the AC would cost about $1000-$1200 to fix.  In the past THREE YEARS, I’ve only put about 19,000 miles on it because I pretty much only drive to Home Depot, Radio Shack, the UPS Store -and, oh, I pretty much use it as a place to smoke cigars.  Yep, my favorite relaxing hobby now is lighting a cigar, grabbing some coffee (or iced coffee), and just driving around!

But back on point, that’s a serious thing.  Benzene is definitely toxic -and who knew that my “440 Air Conditioner” (roll down 4 windows and go 40 miles an hour) was actually helping me avoid this.

That is alot miles and alot of driving.  She must have a good engine.

Cigars in the car—-I smoked cigarettes for about 19 years and ended up quiting 3 years ago.  Well, I ended picking up cigar smoking, at work as a cigarette replacement.  Not a good thing.  You think cigarettes stink on your clothes, whoooo doooooggggg!    I still enjoy a good cigar on occasion.  But, my humidor is empty at the moment.  Thanks for reminding me to fill er’ up.
up.

I think most people probably let the hot air out when they first get in the car anyway.  But just a little extra incentive I guess.

While I appreciate your concern for exposing a possible hazard, the email you quote from is really full of half truths and exaggerations. The first thing that stands out is that the first measurement is given in sq foot when a gas is measured in cubic feet. The second mention of benzene numbers is without units at all. Then if you search scholarly articles on the subject and related subjects, no such study ever appears. So while the effects of benzene on the body are truthfully listed, the causitive agents are greatly misleading. For instance, did you know that gasoline combustion produces benzene in higher concentrations than almost any plastic will offgas? So sitting in traffic with your windows rolled down probably exposes you to more benzene than would be released in a hot car that has been sealed for several hours?

While it may be a good idea to blow the hot air out of the car before you turn on the airconditioning (from a purely economical and thermodynamic advantage point), whether you are saving yourself from a life of benzene toxicity is purely speculation and exaggeration- in my humble opinion.

It’s so funny how so much of this shit never pans out.  I can’t find the site right now (don’t know if it even exists anymore), but a couple of years ago I found a site with a long list of “Strange but True!” type of facts…

...and NONE OF THEM were accurate.  All of them were urban legends -yet, of course, they were purported to be 100% legitimate.  The only thing I really remember is Coke originally being purple or something like that -not true at all.

When you look into it, most of the crazy stuff we heard growing up was bogus -Babysitters doing LSD and cooking babies in the oven and tucking the roast into bed, etc.  All bogus!  Thank you snopes, thank you internet.

The last time I lived in Jacksonville, Fl, there was an internet email circulation all over the world that people HERE in Jax were putting syringes in the handle of gas pumps, and people that were pumping gas were getting stuck.  It never happened -and this time I was actually living in the place were it was purported to be happening.  There was a made up sherriff name and everything -and next time you pump gas, I want you to get that pump in your hands and look really hard at that handle.  Try to rationally think how you could possibly rig up something like that anyway without it being totally obvious.  You can’t!

My MOM sent me that email panicking, too!  FFS…

I think in principle this still sticks.  TonyB mainly pointed out technical errors and how you get as big of a dose if you are sitting in traffic with windows rolled own and such.  So, I think they kind of of overhyped it.  I will still follow it as I feel, the less the exposure to benzene, the better.

True true, personally I prefer to just roll my windows down.  Don’t get to do that year round in upstate NY, so regardless of how muggy it is, I still shy away from using the a/c.  Even so, it’s usually WARM when I start the car up, so I’d be waiting a few minutes to use it anyway.
