Im just thinking, in any good Hairloss regime, always included is something to combat the bacteria and yeast that can cause dandruff, seborraic dermititis and hair fall, whether it be nizoral (The anti-bacterial Ketoconazole), Caol Tar, Tea Tree oil, Eucalyptis oil, coconut oil, or grapefruit seed extract etc.

Yet many home remedies for other bacterial or yeast infections, include balancing the bad bacteria or yeast by increasing the amount of Normal flora, which differs depending on different parts of the body, normal flora inhabit the skin, sebaceous glands, scalp, Gastro intestinal tract, Genital tract, Urinary tract, to name a few, whereas the Blood, brain, spinal cord, menigies,  Lungs, , to name a few, are sterile.

Many ideas exist for this, such as probiotics used everyday, or especially after/during anti-biotic treatment, or Yogart is taken by females especially.  Since the Urethra is so much shorter in females due to lack of a penis, they are much more prone to Urinary Tract Infections, and a common treatment after use of anti-biotics is to insert yogart into the vagina.  Gross? perhaps, but its been scientifically proven to work, because it increases the normal flora population, and allows ur body to fight bad bacteria and yeast naturally.

So what im getting at, is perhaps populating the scalp with normal flora, may work better than killing off the bad bacteria or yeast.  Iguess it would have to be a probiotic drink or yogart.

Thoughts?

Isn’t that what Kefir is basically doing?  I know some others -including Nidhogge- were experimenting with it.

http://www.communicationagents.com/chris/2007/05/01/how_to_use_probiotics_kefir.htm

Kefir

A cultured dairy product, not unlike drinking-style yogurt, but more tart and refreshing and has more therapeutic value than yogurt.

Kefir is made from grains, or “starter” (which can be purchased from health food stores), and milk: cow, goat, mare, sheep, soy or rice. With proper care, kefir grains can be used over and over again for a lifetime.

It is best made from raw, fresh, whole, organically-raised goat or cow milk as it has not been pasteurized and contains enzymes which help break down fats and proteins and makes it less mucous-forming.

The friendly yeast and bacteria in kefir are crucial for restoring and maintaining a healthy flora colony in the small and large intestine. It’s acidic environment creates an inhospitable environment for parasites and other unfriendly organisms. It is especially beneficial during and following antibiotic treatment and packs a powerful one-two punch when combined with probiotics (an acidophiluslbifidus complex nutritional supplement).

Kefir is especially useful for children, in order to keep their immune systems strong, since they are exposed to many viral and bacterial infections at school and daycare.

Kefir may prevent stomach ulcers which are often caused by the He\icobaeter pylori bacteria. Kefir is nature’s natural antibiotic, and along with cultured vegetables and probiotics helps rebuild the inner ecosystem.

Kefir contains:

* A complete protein (all the essential amino acids) which is critical for healing

* Tryptophan to help calm the nervous system

* Abundant calcium and magnesium

* Vitamin B6

* Phosphorus (an important mineral for utilizing carbohydrates, fats and proteins for growth, cell maintenance and energy)

* Biotin (another 8 vitamin which assists in the manufacture and oxidation of fatty acids and carbohydrates)

* An excellent source of Vitamin B12 which contains important mineral elements and is essential for longevity. B12 cannot be made synthetically—it must be grown in bacteria or molds. If builds immunity, increases energy and counteracts allergens. B12 needs calcium for proper absorption, and nature has provided that as well in Kefir.

* Kefir is also rich in Vitamin B1 (thiamin) which is known as the “morale vitamin” for its beneficial effects on the mental attitude and nervous system. Thiamin is linked with enhanced learning capacity, growth in children, improvement in muscle tone of the stomach, intestines and heart, and is essential for stabilizing appetite and improving digestion.

I have ZERO practical knowledge on it -except that you basically have to grow it yourself.  Clicking that picture will take you to an e-How article on how to make it once you have the grains.

I’ll try to start the wiki article on that tomorrow…

Sounds interesting.  I’m inspired!!  High protien enzyme that topically kills bacteria and yeast.  I might just have to make a mask and try it out on a client or two.  Maybe we could get a few forum members to try it.  Much like the SBT oil, the mask might be even more effective if used after a cleansing treatment. I would imagine it would feel very soothing on the scalp.

I’m always up for some self-experimentation Scalp Skin Lady! smile

On that note, I was making my own home-made kefir for some time, and then would use it topically, but I got lazy with it.  It did seem to make my scalp feel quite nice though.

Here are some quotes regarding coconut oil increasing the friendly bacteria

“When coconut oil is put on the skin it doesn’t have any immediate antimicrobial action. However, when bacteria which are always present on the skin turn these triglycerides into free fatty acids, just as it does with sebum, the result is an increase in the number of antimicrobial fatty acids on the skin and protection from infection. The free fatty acids also help to contribute to the acid environment on the skin which repels disease causing germs.”

“Coconut oil is nature’s most abundant source of MCFAs or medium-chain triglycerides (MCT). MCTs are loaded with antimicrobial nutrients. Think of MCTs as bodyguards of your skin”

“Our skin is home sweet home to countless microorganisms, mostly harmless and some even helpful. Lipophilic bacteria is one of the good guys. They break down MCTs by feeding on the sebum and coconut oil.”

perhaps that is what that $2000 telomerase (sp?) product is REALLY doing. it had been speculated that you might as well put yogurt on your head. but here is a link (that was originaly posted by some one else, dont remember who)..

i’ve had this in my history tabs for quite sometime and have been meaning to try it.

Yep, that’s the site that I found out about (and attempted) the topical kefir from.

Unfortunately, I didn’t see it through.  I did it a few times a week for a few weeks, and I mentioned in this thread it made my scalp feel good—no itch, but I got lazy with it.  Sometime in the future I’ll give it another go though.  I’ll bet with Scalp Peels it’ll do a good deal!

That telomerase thing sounded really good when I first read about it on that guy’s site for 2,000$ (70 year old bald guy regrowing hair in weeks!) but then I did some more research and read the Wikipedia article on how it might actually exacerbate the production of tumorogenic cells.

This is an excerpt from the article if you don’ want to wade through the whole thing

“This model of cancer in cell culture accurately describes the role of telomerase in actual human tumors. Telomerase activation has been observed in ~90% of all human tumors,[citation needed] suggesting that the immortality conferred by telomerase plays a key role in cancer development. Of the tumors that have not activated TERT,[22] most have found a separate pathway to maintain telomere length termed ALT (Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres).[23] The exact mechanism behind telomere maintenance in the ALT pathway has not been elucidated, but likely involves multiple recombination events at the telomere.”

Sure, shit happens...but so does good shit!

I actually communicated a bit with the owner of the telomerase product and he said that the cancer concerns didn’t apply to what they were doing, and gave some explanation that I’ve forgotten.  Apparently, it’s safe.

An easier way to apply kefir is to make water kefir. Put some in a small spray bottle and spray it on your scalp. It wont smell bad and it’s cosmetically friendly so you don’t have to worry about washing it out.
