One of the most contentious issues in the vast literature about alcohol consumption has been the consistent finding that those who don’t drink actually tend to die sooner than those who do. The standard Alcoholics Anonymous explanation for this finding is that many of those who show up as abstainers in such research are actually former hard-core drunks who had already incurred health problems associated with drinking.

But a new paper in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research suggests that - for reasons that aren’t entirely clear - abstaining from alcohol does actually tend to increase one’s risk of dying even when you exclude former drinkers. The most shocking part? Abstainers’ mortality rates are higher than those of heavy drinkers.

I read this article yesterday morning, and although I absolutely agree with the findings, the commentary of the Time magazine journalist is IDIOTIC.

Statements like this:

It’s true that those who abstain from alcohol tend to be from lower socioeconomic classes, since drinking can be expensive. And people of lower socioeconomic status have more life stressors - job and child-care worries that might not only keep them from the bottle but also cause stress-related illnesses over long periods.

...are so out of touch and non-factual that it’s ridiculous.  Poor people don’t drink because they can’t afford it?!?!?!  Yeah, and they can’t afford cigarettes, either.  Has that journalist ever actually left his Ivory Tower for ten seconds to see what the real world is like?

I’m quite sure that there are certainly places in the world where poor people can’t afford to drink alcohol -but you’d be talking about places like ETHIOPIA, where people would be much more likely to have a shortend lifespan for a multitude of other reasons, therefore discluding them from this study.  Therefore, they logically wouldn’t be included.

...And to say that people of lower socioeconomic status have more life stressors is outright bogus.  The ability to “reason” is a a trait that is becoming a rarity in this country, and it’s almost completely gone in the media.

None of what I’m pointing out was in the ACTUAL STUDY -it’s all opinions added in to the article as fact from a Time Magazine journalist (the same magazine that voted the HairMax Laser Comb as the “Invention of the Year”).  So, the study’s findings are I’m sure quite legitimate, and that’s very interesting.

So, drink up everyone… but tune out the garbage from Time.

I also find this ridiculous. It is the exact opposite of what I see in the real world. I find that poor people drink more. People that drink a lot tend to be poor. People that drink a lot tend to get fired from jobs, get into criminal trouble, make babies they have to support etc. I also don’t see why poor people are necessarily under more stress either. From what I can see poor people seem less stressed. That’s how they became poor in the first place! They never worried about anything! I know a lot of people that are broke because they’re so damn relaxed they never worry about money!
