Welcome to the site!

Ok, even though this site was made from scratch, it has one of the most powerful Content Management Systems ever made powering it.  It’s actually a beta version of the CMS, though, and there are a lot of bugs -and it looks like I’m just about the only person in the entire world beta testing the forum module, so I’m the one finding the bugs!

So, there are some things that are wrong right at this second… bugs and lacking features!

The Bugs:

These aren’t my fault!  First of all, the “smileys” don’t work in Internet Explorer, and the “Check Spelling” doesn’t work at all.  Also, If you try to make two duplicate posts in a row, the error message telling you that you can’t do that doesn’t show up.  So, you are left there just clicking “Submit” over and over again, not knowing what the hell is wrong.  These are acknowledged errors and should be fixed in the next update.

“Polls” and “Announcements” don’t work yet either.  I’m pretty sure that these are bugs, and it isn’t something I did with the code.  We’re currently discussing it on the CMS’s forums to find a solution.  Either way, they will be fixed soon.

Lacking Features:

Fancy, awesome things like embeding youtube and streaming video hasn’t been coded for this beta version yet.  AS SOON AS THEY COME AVAILABLE -which shouldn’t be too long- I’ll implement them!  As of now, of course (since this is the site with the most multimedia ever in the world of hair loss), we can do all of that in the other parts of the site, so it’s not that big of a deal for the forums to be lacking that feature for a while.

Also, little things like WYSIWYG full text editors haven’t been developed yet, either, for this version!  Once again, they will be developed soon, and I’ll put them in as soon as they come online.

Once again, this is the most incredible behind-the-scenes engine there is that can run a site.  Unfortunately, it’s brand-spanking new, and it has a lot of things to work out.  Couple that with the fact that I indeed did write the code for this site on the back of a cocktail napkin, and you usually don’t “bat 1000” in the first few months!  lol…

Anyway, enjoy the site!

-O.M.G.

Okay, OMG, I think I found one bug - I can see your IP address and it allows me the capability to ban you.  No big deal really.

Yeah, you should be able to see my IP!  You can’t ban me, though.  Don’t try it just to be sure! lol…  but yeah, I can’t be banned -and I don’t think you can be either.  I’ll go check the code on the ban part just to make sure.

Oh, obviously all of the sidebars and things like that are a work in progress!  They’ll be up to snuff soon enough, though.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m so sick of forums that wouldn’t change to accomodate the most basic internet upgrades that I’ll always keep this thing on the cutting edge.

Oh, and you’re using firefox, right?  That’s why the smileys work!

I’m going to try out the forum layout like this, but I’ll consider getting rid of that right sidebar.  I think I’ll get used to it this way, though.  It’s just every other forum pretty much takes up the whole screen and it’ll take a while to get used too this!

Yep, that’ll be soon!  I’ve just got a few little things to do -add the comments section, the member tweet, the veterans blog, and we’re good to go.

I’ll tell you what… I’m SICK of working on the code of this damn site, though!  lol…  I’m ready to focus on the CONTENT!

I went around the site and tidied up a lot of the links, etc.  One thing I noticed that I haven’t formatted yet is the:

•  View New Posts
•  View Today’s Active Topics
•  View Pending Posts
•  Mark All Posts as Read

...section in the control panel.

I actually don’t really like how the CMS does those things behind the scenes… they use the search engine on the site to process them, and the results aren’t as “spot on” as I’d like.  Hopefully they will tweak that soon.

Anyway, I’ll format those tomorrow -or soon enough.

Ok, you’ll notice that you’ll see your avatar in the member console now!  MAN… that was hard to figure out! lol…

I’m working on the comments right now, and I’m going to add a “most recent comments” section on the sidebars when I’m done!

Also, don’t worry… most people AREN’T going to see all the ip address, ban, move, etc. options.  Members only see the “pm | quote” and “report | ignore” on the bottom row.

Oh, I uploaded a lot of decent avatars in the default photo if you want a funny one.

-O.M.G.

PS-  Isn’t is bizarre seeing “January 2010” as our “member since” dates?  Wow… a new decade!  ...And yes, it totally is a “new” decade.  While people may argue that the new decade doesn’t start until 2011, I must say that “decade” is an ambiguous term that means “10 years” -ANY 10 YEARS… and human beings celebrate the ten year blocks that are associated with the changing of numbers.

So… we celebrate NUMBERS, not official decades since the start of time that started in year 1 or 0 or whatever.

Yep, that’s me drinking and smoking a cigar!

I’m so glad that you are over here already and can be a part of getting this site off the ground!  I have a feeling you are going to be really popular.  I’m really serious that I’ve always felt that what you do with scalp peels, etc., is something that we all should be doing -but it always slipped my mind.  As soon as I started getting my ideas together for the site, I thought right away that we needed to put that info in some front page articles so we never lose track of that info again!

I think probably everything you ever posted at that other forum is toast now.  Most threads before about 2007 are all GONE.  Oh well, but that is NOT going to happen here!

As far as the others getting over here, I’m sure we’ll get most of the decent ones -but that’s not the point of this site, really.  I’m also sure a lot of people that have treated me very poorly will probably have an “Oh crap” reaction after they realize that they won’t have a shot at posting at the busy, happening board!  Karma is a total bitch sometimes!  lol…  I’m hoping those people will just leave the forum world forever -and besides, the “regular” forum is becoming obsolete anyway.

The real point of this site, though, like I said, isn’t to attract the existing forum members -I feel a lot of those people are what is actually wrong in the hair loss world anyway.  The point is is to get the millions of English speaking balding people that AREN’T attracted to post.  It doesn’t make any sense that you can count the number of decent hair loss posters outloud if you had to when there are literally MILLIONS that could get involved.  The fact is… they haven’t been drawn to post yet, and I think we know how to accomplish that.  The other sites can have their 20-30 prolific posters, I don’t care… we want the WORLD.  We have a completely different mission statement than any other site, and this is the first site actually run by the people that are trying to do something about hair loss.

Glad to see you here!

-O.M.G.

Real glad to see you aboard.  I’m actually hoping that you can write an article soon on peels and, in particular, a protocol to follow for hair loss (what sort of peels you recommend, etc.).  I think that, in conjunction with LLLT, peels can yield some amazing results.

Animated avatars are cool, I couldn’t resist using one of mine on this forum, but they chew up cycle time and, in this forum and on my forum too, cause the cursor while typing a post entry to blink and behave erratically, like an epileptic at a red light.  Just a ‘keep this in mind’ thought, here.

Hey, Retro!

No, this is completely different!  Get out of your head what you are used to with hair loss sites -this is something else entirely and has no equal.

Actually… this site’s purpose is to attract the millions of people searching for hair loss solutions that don’t have or want anything to do with forums at all.  Think about it… in all of the balding english speaking world, you can count the number of active contributors on all the major forums on a couple of sets of hands -something is really really wrong with that picture.

So, allow yourself to raise the bar in what to expect from this site -that simple “forum only” site model worked fine for a few dozen of us -but there is a much bigger picture out there, and it’s on that includes people -scientists and amateurs alike- that can help us solve hair loss.

Sounds good to me.  I’m open to everything.

By the way, I just finished building my Laser Messiah last night.  (We had been communicating about power supplies over email, and I just ended up hardwiring to the supply as the disconnects were giving me some trouble.)  Wanted to thank you for all of the help, and also for making your how-to’s public.  Really looking forward to adding this to my regiment.

The disconnects are ALMOST ALWAYS the source of every single problem!!!  Yeah, they are definitely frustrating and it’s better to hard wire it.  I’ve thought about doing that for the helmets I build, but the “convenience” factor of being able to remove the helmet has trumped it so far!  The good thing is that I think I’ve finally done something right because it’s been about six months since I’ve had any problems with that.

Congrats on finishing it, though!  Be proud!

I *bought* the best search function there is… and I haven’t implemented it yet! lol…  It’ll be coming soon!  All this crap is right around the corner!  What’s great is that it’ll allow me to add “featured items” to the search.  For example, let’s say that you want to learn more about lasers.  Well, I can put the [future] “lasers 101” page to show at the top.  So whenever we have a page that actually answers the most common questions about the topics that people search for, we can make sure that the first links send them to what they are looking for the most.

Most of that will be the wiki, by the way… that thing is going to be AWESOME when it’s fully functional.  Right now we can’t see the new pages in the sidebars yet, and that will come soon -I hope, we’re waiting on some geek somewhere to fix that code!

Oh, and Ryan is indeed the “official site spokesman”.  You’ll start seeing him a lot.  He doesn’t post yet, but he will in the future.  He’s like 6’6”, by the way.  I don’t know if that comes across in the videos or not but he’s a big guy.

Ok guys, I know you probably can’t tell anything on your end, but I updated the software of the site and MAN… things are running so much smoother with the control panel!  It’s a much better system going on right now!

THE GOOD NEWS is that the spell check now works!  That’s important for someone like me that has way too much to do than be a good spell-a-matician.

The absolutely horrible news is that the smilies still don’t work for I.E. (in the forums only -they still work in article comments), and I know that’s absolutely tragic and a lot of you are going to commit suicide because of this.  I can see the vicious hate mail now… “OMG, if you don’t make it so I can make an animated laughing smilie in my Internet Explorer, I’m going to blah blah blah…”.

Yeah, I was sort of being sarcastic there, but actually I’m so O.C.D. about this stuff that the smilies bug the hell out of me!  lol…  In the meantime, I may actually write a code to determine if you are using I.E. and HIDE THAT OPTION if you are.

Phew… actually this was a tough task updating the site (and maybe some of you saw that it was offline for a half hour or so) -and it was SCARY because none of you knew this except the other editors, but actually there were syntax errors in the code that cause full database backups to be faulty.  So, I wouldn’t have easily been able to revert everything back if the system crashed, etc.  Thank god it’s easy to do now.

I’m going to be checking over the next few days if the other updates are available yet -embeding youtube videos in forum posts, being able to view the most recently created wiki pages in the side bar, etc.

I’m also going to be tweaking some of the format over the next month.  I’m going to be making scrollable thumbnails for the articles, etc., so it won’t be limited to two or three, and I need to format the veterans blog and the sidebar comments better (they look AWFUL right now).  I also need to tweek the “preview post” function a bit so you can more accurately see what your post is going to look like.  All of this is “on the list”! lol…

I realize that every once and a while, you’ll see fonts that don’t quite look right, etc.  Just bear with that… I had to build this site from ground up, so I got sick of tweaking some of those things.  They’ll be fixed one day -hopefully before our official launch.  I’m a graphic nut and I really enjoy nice, clean websites so I’m going to keep trying to evolve this site into a better and better place to post.

The search function will be there soon enough -give me some time!  Right after I type this, I’m going to make the “save sent items” default to “yes”, so you guys will stop telling me it’s not saving sent emails even though the option is right under your nose.  —FIXED.  THE PRIVATE MESSAGES AUTOMATICALLY WILL DEFAULT TO SAVING IN YOUR SENT ITEMS FOLDER NOW.

Also, we are going to start our “show” very soon.  Basically, every week or so one of the editors are going to make youtube videos on the current hot topics that we should be paying attention to.  We’ll have guests, etc., and the main point is so we can really FOCUS on going forward -literally asking the questions “What the hell do we need to find out about X or do about Y, or maybe we need to start looking at Z”.

Eventually this will progress to a streaming, LIVE show -maybe with a call in feature, too- but I’m going to have to slowly amass the equipment first.  Give me a year or so -all of us hosting will need the practice first anyway.

I’d like to have it up on Friday nights, but Friday nights are the slowest time for any hair loss site.  Thursdays are traditionally the busiest days, so maybe I’ll make sure that it’s up on Wednesday nights about 9pm EST.

Like I said… we can move FORWARD with things like this.  We won’t be stuck asking the same questions over and over and over again, and then six months later go through it again.

Also, we were waiting to make videos for the articles because of a few issues, but that’s getting resolved.  Look for those soon.

We’re trying to raise the bar of what a hair loss site is.  We’re trying to be proactive and do something about the situation all of us are in, and we are trying to do it in a way that reaches more people than a typical forum does.  I say this all the time, but I sent and received 20,000 emails last year.  Obviously, hardly any of those people post in the forums, and they’ve told me WHY.  Well, I’m taking those reasons to heart, and I think that’s going to make this site in a different class of it’s own.

Ok, that’s all!

-O.M.G.

PS-  If you haven’t noticed, I’m actually becoming more active in this site now.  I invite you to do the same!

A lot of St. Patties Day celebrations and parades are this weekend, so go forth and cause some debauchery out there!

Hey, everybody!

Ok, if you haven’t been receiving email notifications the past two days -and if you haven’t been able to reliably post without it getting “hung up” -apparently that was all my fault, and I now fixed it!

I set up the system so that all of the editors here could email people directly from the console using the main account for the site, and I must have done it wrong.  When you hit “submit” on a post, two things happen… you make the post, and you send notification emails to everyone that needs to be notified.  Well, if the email is configured wrong because the webmaster was focused more on his ham sandwich than the code, then the system will keep trying to send those emails, and you’ll manually have to refresh the page to see your new post.

So, that’s way more than you needed to know, but I like saying these things outloud because I’ve already had people contacting me to tell me that “Wow, you had the same problem that I do… tell me how you fixed it again?”

Also, we are starting the video era of the hair loss internet world, and we have the first dozen or so coming down the pike very soon.

One more thing…

I changed the site’s email to worldhairloss@worldhairloss.org for the notifications.  So, if you had to add the last one to your contacts to keep it out of the junk folder, you’ll need to add this one, too.  By the way, if you reply to that or send an email to it, it won’t be answered… I probably won’t ever even check it.

The one used before was actually my main email for this site, so I wanted another “dummy” one that wouldn’t be handed to spammers if they posted here.
