March 03, 2010, 08:24 PM Well I guess all the people diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer as a result of an elevated PSA blood test have cause to question. http://health.yahoo.com/news/reuters/us_prostate_screening.html Here’s some interesting snipets of the article: “Doctors have routinely recommended PSA tests to men over 50 in the belief that early diagnosis and aggressive treatment for any cancer is better than standing by and doing nothing. But a study published last August in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found routine screening for prostate cancer resulted in more than 1 million U.S. men being diagnosed with tumors who might otherwise have suffered no ill effects from them.” Here’s another snipet “We are increasingly aware of the fact that many men who do choose to be screened are diagnosed with an early prostate cancer that leads to treatment, and if they had not been screened, they never would have known about a cancer that was never destined to harm them,” I’ve always wondered how many times modern medicine takes the credit for curing cancer that people never had in the first place or would never have caused any problems. I once had a patient come in our nursing home with a diagnosis of prostate cancer who had refused further treatment. He lived there ten years before he died at the age of 94….and he didn’t die from prostate cancer anyway! So the next time modern medicine or some drug company comes out and says things like “we are slowly beating cancer”. Please don’t fall for their bullshit. Shit… it’s easy to up the stats by curing cancer someone either didn’t have in the first place or never would have killed them anyway! Furthermore I wonder how many men diagnosed with prostate cancer have suffered incontinence, impotence, etc from being treated for something that would have never harmed them in the first place!

[ # 1 ] March 04, 2010, 12:19 AM i got told by one of my lecturers in my medical science degree, ( a hormone related cancer researcher), that alot of men during autopsy, who have died of old age, or various other things, have prostate cancer discovered, and it was having no adverse effects. cancer refers to unconrolled growth, either benign or malignant, but prostate cancer seems to be getting confused with benign prostatic enlargement. Or to put it another way, prostate cancers, are having quite often the same nil effects. trouble urinating is common when ur old anyway. something we all need to understand, is that cancer is occurring in all of our bodies all the time. every certain number of dna replications is a mistake that produces cancer. Its just various immune cells are identifying the problem, and eating up those cells through a process of phagocytosis. Cancer becomes a problem when the immune system can’t keep up. |
